FAQ::Frequently Asked
Questions |
Q: What is Collision Damage
Waiver (CDW)?
The optional Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) offered by
car rental companies is not the insurance. It’s an
option that relieves the renter of most, if not all, of
the financial responsibility if the vehicle is damaged
or stolen while under rental contract. There are some
exceptions and deductibles that may apply. Using the
vehicle in violation of any of the use restrictions
listed on the rental agreement could void CDW and hold
the renter fully responsible for any damage to the
vehicle
Q: What if I decline CDW?
If you decline CDW you will be responsible for up to the
full fair market value of the vehicle if it is damaged,
vandalized or stolen during the rental, You will also be
responsible for reimbursing the car rental company for
the revenue lost by not being able to use the car while
it is being repaired or not recovered due to theft
("loss of use").
Q: Who needs CDW?
Anybody who does not have any type of insurance, have to
have CDW package while renting to be able to get the
advantage of waiver of any damage to certain extent, in
case of being involved in an accident during the period
of Rental. When renting for business, check with your
corporate travel arranger to determine if the company
has made provisions for coverage in the event of loss.
If you're renting for personal reasons, check your own
automobile insurance policy before you pick up your
rental car. Many policies do cover rental cars, but even
if a renter has personal automobile insurance, he or she
may not be totally protected by the policy he or she
has. For example, if you decline CDW and rely on your
own insurance, you probably would be responsible for
paying your usual deductible. Also, "loss of use" fees
and vehicle towing charges are not normally covered by
personal auto insurance policies. And, personal auto
policies that extend collision coverage to a rental car
may only provide a coverage limit equal to the value of
the vehicle scheduled on the policy. If the value of the
renter's personal auto is less than that of the rental
vehicle, the renter could still have some damage
responsibility. Finally, if you don't own a car and
don't have automobile insurance, you should consider
accepting Collision Damage Waiver
Q: Won't my credit card cover
CDW?
Some credit card companies offer protection if you
present their card at the time of rental and use the
same card to pay for your rental at the time of return.
Renters should examine closely the terms of this
coverage as the protection is often supplemental and
certain limitations or restrictions may apply, like, the
credit card companies do not cover third party
liability.
Q: Is CDW always the same?
CDW coverage and costs can vary depending on the vehicle
types.
Q: How old do you have to be to
rent a car?
To rent any vehicle from Yellow Car Rental the minimum
age limit is 23 years. However from 23 to 25 ages these
drivers should expect to pay a surcharge related to the
increased cost of insurance and a company's loss
experience.
Q: Is there an additional
charge to rent a car if there is going to be more than
one driver?
Usually, there are additional charges for additional
drivers, who must meet minimum age requirements. The
cost of a daily surcharge varies from location to
location, so renters should inquire when making a
reservation.
Q: Will Yellow Car Rental check
my driving record?
To help control skyrocketing auto liability and
insurance costs, several major car rental companies,
utilize various technologies to screen for high-risk
drivers. Where the technologies are not available,
Yellow Car Rental and other rental companies may ask
potential renters for additional identification and/or a
variety of questions regarding their personal driving
records. Whenever a prospective renter's driving history
fails to meet a company's established criteria, the
company can elect to deny rental service.
Q: Why do rental car companies
ask for a credit card & Driver's licence?
Imagine that your brand-new $20,000 Ford Taurus is
parked in front of your house. A stranger knocks on your
door and asks to borrow it for the weekend. She promises
to pay you $100 (about one-third of one percent of the
value of the car) when she brings it back Monday
morning. What would you do?
On one hand, you're intrigued with the idea of getting
$100 for lending your car to someone. On the other hand,
the risk may be too great. You don't even know this
woman or even where she lives. What if she doesn't bring
the car back? You wouldn't even know where to look for
it! What if she damages the car or behaves
irresponsibly? This scenario demonstrates our need to
secure information regarding the credit-worthiness of
our renters.
Sure, we want to "lend" our cars for a fee to people who
want to "borrow" them, but we also want to get them back
in the same condition in which we rented them. Credit
cards and valid drivers' licenses usually provide the
only information we have about our renters. That’s why
many car rental companies no longer rent on a cash basis
under any circumstances. Renters should ask about a
company's rental policies when they make a reservation.
Q: Can I use a credit card
upfront and then pay for the rental with cash when I
return the car?
Although you present a major credit card at the time of
rental for pre authorization, but you can pay with cash
when you return. Since car rental companies ask for
credit approval on the estimated car rental charges when
you pick up the car, that amount will be held against
your credit balance on that card for up to 30 days,
regardless of how you pay upon return.
Q: What credit card can I use?
Yellow Car Rental accepts most major credit cards;
Master, Visa, Amex and Debit.
Q: Are there any other payment
alternatives?
Yes, you can pay through certified cheque, money order
or bank draft etc., but pre authorization would only be
taken on any valid major and active card.
Q: Can I use a debit card?
Debit card will be accepted as a form of payment only
upon return of the vehicle and if the card it has the
Interac emblem/logo. A credit card is still required to
be presented at the time of rental.
Q: If I pick up the car on
Tuesday at noon, and return it Wednesday at 4:00pm, will
I be charged for one day or two?
Most car rental rates are based on what is called a
24-hour clock. For instance, if you rent a car for one
day, your rental day begins at the time between noon and
1:00pm on Wednesday, you'll be charged for three extra
hours or one additional day, whichever is less. In
addition, the charges for optional waivers, optional
insurance and surcharges are applied on a 24-hour basis.
Q: How can I get the best deal?
Car rental pricing is like airline pricing - if you
travel at off-peak times and/or make a reservation well
before in advance, you often get a better deal. Also,
call for special promotions advertised by the company on
their web site. And also the longer you rent the more
you save.
Q: What taxes and levies will be added to my rental
charge?
In addition to the regular rental charges renters are
required to pay the following taxes and levies:
· Provincial Social Services Tax (PST) currently at a
rate of 8% on most rental charges
· Goods and Services Tax (GST) currently at a rate of 5%
on most rental charges
· Tax For Fuel Consumption (TFFC) currently at a rate of
$0.59 per day
· Vehicle Licensing & Tax Recovery (VLATR) currently at
a rate of $1.98 per day
· Location Recovery Fee (LRF) or Airport Access Fee (AAF)
currently 10% to 15% of most rental charges on car and
truck rentals taken from International Airport locations
only may apply.
Q: Can I use pre-pay card for
pre- authorization?
Yellow Car Rental only accepts the post paid, active and
valid credit card for pre-authorization.
Q: Can I drive on my
International Driving licence?
Yes, you can, but we would like to see the valid
documentary proof, for security reasons.
